Grocery Geek, January 4th

I’m still in love with being able to order and pick up my groceries; though, I was a bit disappointed with a few things about my pick up today.  1) HEB charges the difference when they substitute things.  They chose eggs that were twice the amount and I got three 18 packs, so it was over $20 just for eggs among some other price differences and 2) My bell peppers and mandarin oranges weren’t in the best shape.  I don’t like not being able to pick my produce.  Also HEB charges $5 personal shopping fee (the next few are waived).  I like the pick up at Walmart better (and the costs), but I prefer the products typically at HEB.  Also.  HEB called and took the charge off of the eggs since they were a lot more than what I was expecting to pay.  So we’ll see what happens.  Overall, I spent way less than I would have if I had gone into the store.  I went in for 2 things today and came out spending $25.  And I was in a hurry.  I can’t imagine how much I would have spent if I wasn’t in a hurry.  So with that $25, I spent $195 for 2 weeks’ worth of groceries.

I guess one more thing that I should mention is that I had an $80 Grove Collaborative order go through my account that I wasn’t expecting, so there’s that.  I didn’t really need much that came in the order, but we will use it eventually I guess.  I ended up disconnecting Grove and my PayPal account so it shouldn’t happen again.  I’ll share what I got from them in a bit.

Here is what I got from HEB:

  • Organic baby spinach
  • Cucumber (1)
  • 3 pack of bell peppers
  • Organic baby carrots (1lb)
  • Broccoli florets (bag)
  • Yellow squash (1)
  • Pink lady apples (3lb)
  • Cutie mandarins (3lb)
  • Celery
  • Mushrooms
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Grape tomatoes

  • Natural chicken nuggets
  • 3, 18pk pasture raised eggs
  • Cage free egg whites
  • Cottage cheese (they didn’t have the bigger one so they gave me two smaller ones)
  • Hormel natural smoked turkey (family size)
  • Hormel natural uncured salami (2 packs)
  • 3lbs ground beef
  • Natural chicken thighs (I think there are 4 in the package)

  • 2 natural creamers (HEB)
  • 2% milk
  • Unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 2 packs of Greek yogurt (4 containers in each)
  • 2lbs of Owens natural breakfast sausage
  • 1lb HEB mild turkey breakfast sausage
  • 1lb shredded cheddar
  • 1lb shredded mozzarella
  • Natural apple gouda chicken sausage
  • Natural spinach feta chicken sausage
  • Natural provolone parmesan chicken sausage (I got these all on sale)
  • 2, 8oz blocks of gouda
  • Smithfield natural bacon

  • Organic pasta sauce
  • Organic pizza sauce
  • Natural grape jelly
  • Organic instant coffee (for camping)
  • Organic penne pasta
  • Organic capellini pasta

  • Sea salt and vinegar kettle chips
  • Chewy chocolate chip cookies (for camping)
  • Triscuits
  • Mac N Cheese
  • Red beans and rice (for camping)

  • Organic apple juice (they were buy one get one free)
  • Whole wheat English muffins
  • 2 loaves of whole wheat bread
  • Flour tortillas (plain, white cause I don’t do wheat tortillas haha)
  • Uncured pepperoni

  • Toilet paper
  • Natural whey powder
  • La Croix
  • Generic zyrtec

And from Grove:

Acure Shampoo and Conditioner

Castile soap (I use this for face wash)

  • 2 sponges
  • Schmidt’s jasmine tea deodorant (LOVE this brand of deodorant!)
  • Yes to Carrots night cream
  • 2 bars of Grove bar soap (one was free)

Method toilet cleaner

Mrs. Meyers dishwashing detergent, dish soap, and hand soap.

Method hand soap (free)

I’ve been making my own cleaners and detergents but haven’t been impressed with the homemade toilet cleaner or dishwashing detergent.  I need to keep tweaking it.  Since I got some new toilet cleaner and dishwasher detergent that I wasn’t planning on, I guess I’ll work on it when I’m out of these.  Haha.

I made some homemade laundry detergent the other day that I’m loving!  It’s so simple, natural, and cheap.
