It has been a long time since I have blogged. I have been super busy. Between schooling, outdoor activities, camp activities, eating in the dining hall, doctor appointments, our new puppy, being out of town, etc, I just haven’t had time. I find this to be a great thing, though! I am busy in a way that I like… with my family and camp family. Being outside. Doing school. It’s all stuff that makes me happy!
These are the things that have been happening…
I changed what we are doing for science because the Good and the Beautiful science is just too much for me. It involves tons of prep time, and I feel like it’s complicated. I set it aside because I might use it in the future, but for now, I’m focusing on a Charlotte Mason way of doing science.
I bought The Burgess Bird Book and a guide to go through it using Simply Charlotte Mason. I bought the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America. We will utilize the Handbook of Nature Study, Nature Anatomy, and the binoculars that we already have.
Last weekend I re-organized the office/school room. I had moved it around and didn’t like it, so I put it back. The boys are preferring to do school in that room even though it’s super small. We still do math in the living room since we watch the video.
I don’t get as many pictures of school these days because it’s just what we do now. Here are a few pics. These are pics of Story of the World work, dictation (using Aesop’s Fables), poetry writing using The Good and the Beautiful and other work, and Math U See.
I put makeup on a few days this week as I tried to get myself up and moving each day. Karis had her first dance on Thursday night.
I rode my new bike this week for the first time. It thrilled Levi who ended up joining Robert and me. I did take a fall, and I was pretty proud of my first bruise and cuts for mountain biking for the first time.
We took Loki on a few walks.
We ate in the dining hall most nights and the kids just love playing with their friends outside afterwards.
I celebrated 2 1/2 years of sobriety and led the meeting on Wednesday. I just love our little home group.
Robert and I had a date night Friday night. It was so amazing. Coffee shop then a cafe here in my parents’ town while they hung out with the kids and puppy.
And of course my favorite time… when I get up early enough to do Bible study before the boys wake up.
I’m leaning more towards doing more of a Charlotte Mason philosophy because I feel it fits our lifestyle and it keeps things simple. That’s how I do writing for the most part. Copywork, dictation, and narration (they write about what they are reading and then they do oral narration about their history… they will eventually write about history). I bought Writing Strands for the boys to have a little extra writing to do independently. I got it used for $4 on Thriftbooks. I’m not too concerned though. The Good and the Beautiful eventually picks up in the area of writing in levels 4 and 5. We are doing level 3 right now.
We also do science in the form of nature studies (and through living books), math is hands on through Math U See (which is suggested by Simply Charlotte Mason). History is Story of the World which is taught through living books. Art appreciation and fine arts are taught through The Good and the Beautiful. I’m teaching spelling and reinforcing grammar through dictation. They are doing handwriting practice through copywork.
Next weekend we are going to the Davis mountains to camp as a family for Robert’s birthday. We are so excited and can’t wait!
Karis and the boys aren’t doing school tomorrow so we are going to town to get groceries and pick up some raw milk for the next two weeks.
The boys and I will have full days of school Tuesday through Friday and we will spend time outside as much as possible.
I feel like things are going well and going smoothly. Not every day is perfect and some moments are hard.
